Does ABA harm #ActuallyAutistic people?
Answer: yes it does. Need evidence to prove it as sadly listening to autistics isn't enough. It should be the job of those selling it to prove it's safe.
ABA is apparently 'evidence based' but the evidence is craphttps://autisticuk.org/does-aba-harm-autistic-people/ …

oh Joanne. I fume inwardly at organisations that prey on parents and guilt trip them into adopting their programmes. There are more out there, too.
-
I wish it was an organization. It was the developmental pediatrician. She suggested ABA and a reassessment of the diagnosis bc he only has a few markers of autism. I only wanted to make sure we had a diagnosis so he has support at school.
-
AUGH! "Hey, force your kid to 'act natural' so we don't actually need to support them in school! The eventual long-duration breakdown will be a breeze!" Nooooo, get the supports, & get the special ed/student services on your side if they're good.
-
Thank you! I'm a pretty big mama bear so I'll be all over getting him help and advocating for him.
-
It's a full-time job sometimes. Many teachers don't want to read the IEP, don't want to enact the supports. The good ones will go above & beyond the supports, but I've had a teacher literally bully my kid in front of the class for crying.

-
I can imagine. I have 2 older NT kids and I hate the school board...
-
We never had to mess w/the school board, thankfully. (Though the mom of kid's preschool teacher was on it & *liked* kid, so... ;) A lot of teachers just cannot cope w/autistic *without* intellectual disabilities. They freak.
-
And can't figure out how to deal with a kid who has sensory issues but when they're not stressed to non-verbal, can get work done well. So they heap on NT expectations & panic when it fails miserably. >_< Same w/aides! IEP overall helps, tho'.

So great to hear, Joanne. We never put our son through ABA -- he's now 17 and totally awesome. You'll work our together what is best.
-
No ABA in this house either and progress is happening. My children are developing in their own way. Comparing to NT development is not useful.

Thanks. I will have a look at that later as I'm writing my presentation for the Autism show in two weeks time. Must stop getting distracted by twitter.

No pre ABA test exists to see if it will traumatise, or reward with a good social skills act the child can perform. It is not eliminating being autistic. It’s dog training to look, sound & act Neurotypical which is what many parents and children want until the nervous breakdown.

Autism is a delayed developmental condition. We can reach simple milestones late but may have developed great expertise or knowledge in an advanced area. Beating and berating people who act different because they are different does nothing but delay development.
