Earlier today, @YouTube CEO @SusanWojcicki was asked what's the acceptable failure rate for YouTube's policy enforcement system, which has both humans and machine learning trying to catch stuff that violates YouTube's stated guidelines ...

Wojcicki said different policies have different levels of enforcement accuracy, but "child safety, that's one where we're going to say: We need to be right all the time. We need to try to find every single example that we think is problematic." Really?

Six months ago, YouTube said it was (as Wojcicki put it at the time) "no longer going to allow comments on videos that are featuring young minors anymore" Literally one search and I found 100+ videos from 100+ channels, all featuring very young kids, all with comments enabled

When I provided YouTube with a list of links to the videos I'd found, nearly half had comments disabled within hours. That was about two weeks ago. So, given Wojcicki's comments today, I thought I'd check back on some videos that didn't have comments removed immediately

Yeah, the problem is that you said you'd take actions above your normal protections for children, but you're not living up to those promises

If YouTube has altered its policies since February -- so that now a broad swath of videos depicting young minors are totally cool to have comments -- YouTube should be publicly transparent about those policy changes

Over the course of reporting this story, YouTube PR eventually relented that I could report a new qualification to its original promise: it now considers "adult supervision" in whether or not it disables comments on clips with young minors

Basically, if there is an adult on camera in a video with a young kid, then comments seem to be allowed. But that's not at all how Susan Wojcicki characterized the policy on stage in March when Kara Swisher was grilling her

And YouTube certainly isn't broadcasting how it has rolled back its promises about disabling comments on kids videos in the run-up to getting hit with a record penalty for violating kids data privacy
