I've updated this chart tracking the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus in China, relative to different scenarios. Can clearly rule out the most optimistic. This week should determine whether the next most optimistic is feasible or whether the outlook is far worse. (h/t )

Imagine being a Chinese student in Australia, returning home for the Spring Festival just as the coronavirus starts to become a big deal, and, having not left your house for two weeks because of the outbreak, finding out that you won't be allowed back in Australia...

Hot take: The coronavirus is more of a threat to the rule of Trump than Xi. A lot would need to happen for Xi to lose his grip on power, while Trump is one economic downturn away from his reelection chances plummeting.

Four days ago, a Chinese expert said the coronavirus would peak in about ten days. Before then, the number of cases was growing daily by about 50%. Since then, it's grown by 32%, 30%, 26% and 22%. It's looking good, although official Chinese numbers aren't always accurate.

Has anyone looked into passenger numbers from Wuhan to international destinations and how that correlates with coronavirus cases in those countries? What would this suggest about the lack of confirmed cases in Africa?

On a related note, is the only person I'll listen to on takes about calling 2019-nCoV a "Chinese virus," for he was the only person with enough courage and racial awareness to point out the problematic nature of the name "African swine fever."

It's tough to argue that talking about wild animals as virus carriers is inherently racist given CGTN just published an article titled "Top virus-carrying wild animals that might appear on menus." (Obviously it can be discussed racistly, but the topic isn't inherently so.)

The first paragraph of this article is odd, seemingly accusing Western media of problematically pointing the finger at wet markets. Everybody in China also thought that was true initially.

It's okay to think that French eating snails, Icelanders eating fermented shark, Australians eating Vegemite, or some Chinese eating dogs is weird. It's not okay to think that they're dirty or inferior for doing so.

Hot take: The Hong Kong protests may have saved tens or hundreds of lives in the coming months, as the dramatic reduction in mainland visitors has limited the spread of the coronavirus in the densely populated region

On the current trajectory, there will be 10,000 coronavirus cases in two days, 100,000 in eight days, and one million in two weeks. Hopefully these numbers stop growing exponentially soon!

just a reminder that the Saudis think so little of fellow Muslims that they would send them back to prison or death in an atheist dictatorship that persecutes Islam for the sake of lining the Saudis' own pockets!
