    Electoral college oddities: if the Democratic party hadn't split in 1860 and had presented a united anti-Republican front Lincoln would have lost the popular vote by somewhere between 10-20 points, but still would have won because of the electoral college.

        Interesting thoughts. Lincoln comes in at 39.8%. Bell at 12.6%. Bell had been a Whig, same as AL. Douglas wins 29.5%, more than 10% of that from IL. How many of his northern voters had Breckinridge as a second preference?

        Much depends on who the united Ds nominate. But in a heads up race against a Democrat I think 45% is his floor and he well could’ve won the popular vote.
