In addition to demands for European security Russia mentions Central Asia in a proposed agreement w/ the US & NATO, demanding to stop any military relations between Central Asia & NATO. Interesting to watch how Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan would react to this point.

  4. Read this important thread. We need more (independent) research embedded in policymaking, and we need to be open to learning from the results.

Mohib and Ahmadi all getting kid glove treatment from US media. They will not subject themselves to questions from journalists from Afghanistan. They didn’t do it when they were in power. These are the journos who will ask the tough questions.

Hope the people of Afghanistan are prepared for the “kid glove” treatment Ghani will receive when he finally speaks to the American media. So much of the establishment in DC promoted him for years. They will want to make themselves feel better.

I keep thinking about the AER finding pausing tenure clocks for both men and women for births led to lower tenure transitions for females. Are there other studies and do they also tend to find evidence for such unintended consequences? How broadly are those findings discussed?

Some bold statements from female protestors in Kabul today who carried placards reading "Bread, Work, Freedom, Political Participation": Mullahs' place is pulpits and governance requires expertise.

Moving forward, the TB are yet to define their governance model? The source of legitimacy? The relationship between the state and citizenry? If they reject democracy, they have to present an alternative system. So far, it’s been an attempt to institutionalize a one-party state.

No one wants to say it, but I will: WH has a messaging problem on Ukraine. Sullivan talked a big game about stopping the Nord Stream 2 pipeline if Russia invades. Then evacuation plans for US embassy in Kyiv came out. Meanwhile, Putin keeps making bigger and bigger demands.
