I’m a lawyer, my wife’s a doctor. We got a $10k bill from the hospital she worked for because they said we didn’t get our newborn, born in that same hospital, signed up on health insurance fast enough. For the hospital stay. Where she was born. Took me months to fight that.https://twitter.com/SmithInAmerica/status/1205546782425538561 …

Swede here. My three sons were born to a total out of pocket cost of about 35 dollars. Parking, lunch for me when visiting etc. Paperwork? Zero. That was long ago but still typical today. I can't grasp how Americans absorb the abuse and theft of their "health care system".

Same in Canada. Kid 1: Had a midwife, induced, two days of labour and an emergency c-section. Kid 2: Booked c-section. Total cost: about 50 bucks in cafeteria food and parking fees.

you're born into it and raised in it and most Americans have no experience with foreign systems so no point of reference we age into horror

What is more insane is that there are people here who will defend our system.

The most ironic part is how people want to keep their health insurance even while the insurance screws them. It's like being afraid to leave an abusive relationship.

We are born into it. Many of us find it shocking that people in other countries pay nothing, we have a hard time believing it

We share the financial and social risks of being sick or hurt. We see this as a fundamental human right. Level playing field.

Just to say that I have @aboutKP and my daughter was $25 copay with no paperwork 27 years ago. Son was $100 three years later. Still no paperwork, and they signed up the babies right there. I love no paperwork.
