File systems are weird. I just discovered a monumental mistake in sandboxfs’ readdir implementation… and it only caused visible trouble under a rather strange scenario. And I’m now sure this is a cause of unexplained suboptimal performance; testing that now.

Had pretty decent WiFi throughout the flight but then the connection sucked in the train connection from JFK to home. The former was not possible 10 years ago and the latter has been for a long time. Something to think about...

Mission accomplished: full trip to Brussels and back to Brooklyn without taking any taxis.

Grrr, and now I need to implement xattr support in sandboxfs so that tar can work properly within it as root?

Huh. So sandboxfs fails to update the size of an inode after an append write, which only becomes problematic if the file has been deleted but kept open. Interestingly, this has only shown up as a problem (instantaneously) with "bmake -j", but not with any Bazel build.

Killing the TouchBarServer fixed it. But "being able to lose a key" is not a feature I actively look for in a computer.

Wonderful. Right before my presentation yesterday, the ESC key vanished from the Touch Bar, which brought some kind of amusement as I couldn't handle my own computer (exit full screen?). And the key isn't back yet. Most useless gimmicky thing ever.

Wasn’t expecting such a busy conference. Finding anyone by chance is impossible, and all rooms are annoyingly at capacity. Haven’t been able to see anything yet.

On the flight to Brussels this morning (DL140), the cabin crew manager came and asked if I was Mr. Merino. I had to say yes, of course, but started wondering what was wrong. All he wanted was to thank every one of us, individually, for being medallion members. Nice touch @Delta!

Trying to put sandboxfs to use in pkg_comp and "bmake -j" just doesn't work on top of it. Pretty interesting failure mode... but no idea what's going on. It has to do with how /tmp behaves though.

My take: work on the niche problems before it's too late, especially if the redesign is being done by a different team. Yes, this may look like sabotaging the rearchitecture efforts, but will result in a better overall redesign. 5/
