I'd rather you just said: "I like things the way they are. I don't want to debate with those who differ in experience from me or who don't have my (politics) credentials. I definitely don't want to do social media or listen to anyone who tweets. What even is a tweet? 1/https://twitter.com/jmjafrx/status/1285620801119629312 …

To see the politics of our work (whether left, right, or intergalactic) is just good scholarship. It is the mark of an intellectual. I don't understand this desire to resist doing historical work better. To resist growing. (I mean...I do. You know I do)

Say: "I understand that this stance means the same people, topics, places, words, ideas, ways of reading the archive, narrative strategies, and conclusions will be recycled over and over, maybe with new minutiae, but certainly without fundamental challenge. Yes, I want that. 2/

Say: "I don't think new visions of history or the archive should be given space. I don't think other definitions of harm need to be taken into account. I'm fine with new studies of the same kind of history, but not new historical thinking. Nothing different. Just the same. 3/

Don't forget to add: "And I fully intend to use the power I have in my professional organizations to make this belief/opinion/vision of One True History a reality." 4/

But say that. Say what you mean. Don't say history has no politics. Say the politics of your history is not the politics of my history. Even say you don't like my history or my politics! At least then it could be an honest conversation.
