Disagree. We’ve got over 4K people distributed across 130 countries and I have learned that a balance between async and sync are needed to build teams and remote culture. Human psychology requires a sense of community and ‘togetherness’ that can come from using virtual worlds.
I’ve learned on a distributed team: 1. Distributed teams don’t want workplace to feel synchronous 2. Products building “virtual offices” don’t know remote psychology 3. Remote teams don’t want co-workers to see which apps they’re working in, just like they don’t want that IRL

agreed. 4. Most tools for distributed teams work really well for in-office too and vice versa. At scale, a different floor in a building can feel as remote as someone in another country.

Exactly. This happens on all levels. As long as you can fit all people in a room, you’re already distributed. One of our biggest customers use http://Standups.io only within their building in Tampa. Because they’re distributed across different floors.
