I like the idea of every app having a "simple mode" and an "advanced mode": "Simple" is the single most important use case that everyone actually cares about with a streamlined experience. "Advanced" is everything else that PMs and Designers create.

I built a Twilio “app” for my dad that reroutes calls to his dad in Lebanon. He calls a local number and reroutes directly, costs 10x less and never drops.

That is amazing. You should make this a real product.

But can she order food, get a ride share, a taxi, public transit, a bike, or a scooter that way? And how does she rate or tip her drivers, and order Spotify music for her ride?
-
Haha. Pretty sure his grandmother doesn't care about anything besides the original use case. Request a ride. That's it.

Lived in Milan five years ago and had a taxi service you could text for a ride. No Uber, no hailing taxis on street, easy to use as non-Italian. Think texting is underutilized in many areas

Love this and thanks for the story.

How does this work? Does it tap into some Uber api?
-
Yeah — I think the actual form factor is a one screen app with a single text field and his grandmother types “ride”

Uber had this in 2013 and I eventually was tasked with removing it. The data showed more users were confused than you might think. Happy cases worked well but mistype an address, decide to cancel, or fail to find the car, and things got super difficult to manage over text.

I think it's been rebooted at least twice with failing metrics, FWIW.
