Lots of people dunking on this, and rightfully so. But the entire premise of this -- some sort of social tradeoff between GDP and "traditional values" -- is wrongheaded. There was plenty of GDP growth from 1800 to 1950!

We are not talking enough about the bottom-right picture where the man’s haircut suggests it’s the 1970s and yet, for some reason, there is a painting of a clown on the wall, well after it became clear that clowns are terrifying.

True, but that growth is mainly attributable to the output of Norman Rockwell paintings.
