OK, now I need something short for my graduate class on the irrationality of making plans when the world is burning down. Any ideas?

History friends: What is a good, relatively short piece to assign to incoming graduate students about the unbelievably crappy state of the job market?

I took that video of AOC dancing and turned it into an ad for Medicare For All with a catchy theme song.

If you're headed to to interview for TT jobs: I'm sorry the labor situation in our field's such a mess that you have to attend an expensive meeting in an expensive city just for a chance to be hired. I don't have answers or advice but I wanted to say I see you & it sucks

My colleague Mike Nair-Collins has a devastating critique of organ transplantation as it is currently practiced in the new collection on the definition of death. I'm proud to call him a colleague and friend.

This is such bull***t. First it was a hoax. Then the science was uncertain. Then we were “alarmists.” Then any fix was too expensive. Now it will be fixed with “innovation.”

Great point. Not sure I completely agree, but this is something we really need to talk about.

When you travel to an archive and the government shuts down so it’s closed, and you just figure out some different fucking archive because you paid to be here, and someone asks you about the important methodological choices that go into choosing archives and you just look at them

Once more, the simple solution to homelessness is to get people their own places to live. It is cheaper than the alternative, by far, and it actually works. AS USUAL this is a problem we know how to solve, and refuse to solve.

I am without a doubt a better doctor when I have 30 minutes with primary care patients instead of 15. That’s it.

For all sorts of historical and sociological reasons, I'd think it would be terrible to accept even a well-resourced version of the natural sciences postdoc model as a new normal in humanities and social sciences.

It is also curious how models looking at the impact of pharma innovation on health outcomes use the number of drugs approved as their independent variable in regression. No variables for clinical impact or affordability and how that impacts outcomes.

I had my daughters tricycle listed for sale online. A woman came to buy it and she was a gov’t employee and saving now that she doesn’t know when she’ll go back to work, so she needed to spend less on the bike she was giving her child for Xmas. I gave it to her.

Just received news of an unsuccessful grant application. Extremely disappointed, but sharing this to help normalize the rejections. Academia is both wins & losses and persistence is important.
