Boy there's some people that for real do not even for one second think about the fact that neurodivergent people exist. Like trying to explain that meditation does the opposite thing for many people (activates the sympathetic nervous system), and they're like, IMPOSSIBLE.

When you get the inevitable intrusive, derailing thought, try making a short noise, then refocus on the sensations in your body that you are producing. Shaking your shoulders, tapping your fingers on your chest, face, neck, whatever. Move in a way that feels right to you.

If it stops feeling right, stop doing it. Part of the point is to get in touch with your body and listen to it, so if it says stop and do something else, then do it. When it says, ok we're done with this, be done with it. Start in short sessions and work up to longer ones slowly.

The entire point of meditation is to calm your nervous system and clear your mind if anxious thoughts. Our minds don't "empty" like others do. We shouldn't try to empty them, we should redirect our thoughts to our mind-body connection. We self regulate differently. It's good!

Consider this tweet an official permission slip: You are allowed to stop doing things that are supposed to be "good for you" but instead make you feel very very bad. You are allowed to instead do the "weird" things that accomplish the same goals WITHOUT MAKING YOU FEEL BAD.

The "weird" things are in fact completely normal things that a whole bunch of us have in common, because it turns out we've never been weird for paying attention to what works for us and makes us healthy and happy. We're not weird, we're doing what's right for us. Keep it up!

like "stimming" for some people with autism?

Yes! Exactly like that! That's actually a form of nervous system regulation.

I cannot tell you how many people (including therapists and my own mother) have suggested meditation for my anxiety. I say, over and over, it JUST MAKES ME MORE ANXIOUS!
