Dana, SF has become a candy land for criminals and drug addicts. Residents are terrorized everyday by people shooting drugs out in the open, broken windows and burglaries. This is not okay!
Mandate? That’s not how it works. None of this advice has been effective anywhere. On the other hand the exact opposite (empathy, compassion, decriminalizion, investing in homes and medical services) has been wry effective in the Netherlands, Portugal, etc

Right. So in the meantime, sf residents just have to be okay with burglaries, getting robbed, their cars being broken into, their children seeing people shoot drugs in daylight, seeing the city decay as human feces and other excrements are left in the open? Got it!

In SF, we ignore drug addicts. In Portugal, they actually get fined or sent to professionals. There’s a differencepic.twitter.com/6gdiOJk7pJ

Because the people of Portugal are radically better people than we are. They are not ruthless, bloodthirsty gold rush seekers. Of course their outcome will be different. SF especially is a gold rush camp that pretends its a city.

You can’t mandate people to homes or healthcare services either, so what then?
-
Well you kinda can mandate to healthcare but it looks a lot like imprisonment....

Portugal is mandating rehab alright, and if you don't get it, you get punished.
