During for spinal cord injury, surgeons reroute or ‘transfer’ functioning nerves above the level of injury to paralyzed nerves below the injury. As a result, adults with upper extremity paralysis can regain movement and function in their elbows and hands.

Great thread! I transitioned over the course of my residency and fellowships. For hand fellowship, I used Microsoft Notebook because I found it to be the most user-friendly with which to draw images. That helped with anatomical descriptions, case planning, and technical pearls

I used google docs in training. new docs for each condition and filled in anatomy, exam, surgical techniques. Updated after nearly every case with faculty-specific pearls and after new readings or conferences. Still use. Choose google for crossplatform accessibility

HIPPAA ... but Evernote is amazing. Take pics of papers/textbooks/images. Snap articles from browser. Integrate your cases with your reading. Functional search. Could make your whole case log in Evernote.

Follow-up question for and - What did you find to be a useful and quick way to keep notes on specific cases during residency? Thinking of a personal reference list/resource, beyond what is required for logging.

There are lessons here: 1) paywalls are contributing to the forgetting curve at the level of entire fields 2) lack of archiving of data is contributing to the forgetting curve at the level of entire fields

Ever wonder what the actual incidence of injury is? Happy to share that our research lab has used admin data to estimate. Cannot capture nonop cases, but surgically treated BPI is nearly 1 per 100,000 persons in US.

Really enjoyed this thread, which walks through the evidence that (at least for obesity, at least with current PRS), a genetic predictor that looks good in a vacuum may not add much to a very simple model with baseline covariates.
