No amount of startup bullshit has been as personally fulfilling as working as my work with research scientists and PhD students. I really think about this one a lot, and what it means for how I’ve prioritized my life given what I’m doing now.

  2. I can understand maintainers being burnt out, but turning people away when they want to try and improve things that are directly impacting their workflow is kind of like leaning into the fire!

  3. It’s important to note here that the “hack” would just be to create a transient, project-local REPL configuration file. Not fire ze missiles, not write to some secret user location, and certainly not create some `.ghc.environment` file that breaks everyone’s workflows.

  4. So `cabal v2-repl` won’t load up all of your project modules, and apparently wanting to fix this within `cabal-install` is not acceptable because one of the maintainers “will not allow it”

If you've ever tried to test a stateful app in QuickCheck, Hedgehog or any other property-based testing library you'll know it can be seriously difficult! Check out this tutorial for a simple way to test stateful apps using Hedgehog.

CW unpopular opinion: After a short time, playing around with a few "bigger" Python projects, I am starting to understand why people are not so fond of Python. From where I stand it is not really the language, it is the amount of batteries you need to manage causing problems.

It means that every field in your data type is strict, even the spine. Lazy functions are already the default so you don't need to do anything there. the tl;dr is just enable StrictData and GHC will do the rest.

Strict data and lazy functions is the default you should be using for all production Haskell code.

I've read some truly awful takes on Oracle v. Google. But this is, by a very large margin, the worst. Gets all of the basic facts wrong, misunderstands what's at stake, admits the author is relying on his gut take & then says he must be right because everyone says he's wrong. 🙄

This is the unbarred spiral galaxy NGC 2775, located 56 million light-years (17 megaparsecs) away in the constellation Cancer. It's about 3/4 the width of the Milky Way. This composite comprises image data acquired by Hubble on Oct. 27, 2019.

let's say you're a tech worker in SF unhappy about Palantir and you decide on "name and shame" as a strategy. who do you name and shame? - random unpaid volunteers maintaining such critical OSS as "is-odd" - Palantir employees, of which there is literally a list you can get

Sonia Gupta seems like a fairly harsh person. Which fits, since she spent years as a prosecutor in Lousiana. I looked up a few of her cases.
