Jigar is leading the way in showing how to have major impact on the energy sector. Creating great ROI for customers and investors with environmental sustainability as just an added positive externality. This is massively scalable. Congrats, Jigar & team!

  3. Whether you build the big infrastructure of the future or the software that helps companies/governments/etc through the transition (for example), why is there a value judgement on one vs other? In my book we need both so work on piece you are best equipped to tackle. The end.

Couldn’t agree more with this sentiment. If one thinks of climate tech as a tree trunk one will find a # of promising companies emerging along the various branches—blue tech and it’s associated twigs show particular promise. Bottom line—it’s more than just clean tech!

  5. "Are you an impact fund?" "No" "What is your #1 currency, impact or profit?" "Impact, for sure" "So, how are you not an impact fund?" "Cuz we know the more money we make, the more impact we will have"

  6. And fwiw, for those that say "there aren't enough meaningful climate investments that aren't infrastructure-heavy to warrant a dedicated fund", I say we'll see about that!

  7. For context, I just had coffee w/ an extremely successful tech operator who was neck deep in the first clean tech wave. He's had a bad taste in his mouth ever since. He came in a cynic about climate tech, and came out motivated and ready to attack!

  8. The words "impact investing" and "cleantech" need to be quarantined. They both mean well, but I don't think they are productive, at least in my circles :)

  9. A lot of people hear climate tech and assume big infrastructure and long time horizons, and that is simply not the case. It depends.

  10. Just because cleantech companies involved huge infrastructure costs and long timelines doesn't mean you need to back those kinds of companies to invest in meaningful climate tech. We need both. And you can do climate tech and stay completely away from the cleantech cos of old.

spotted in my inbox: "I had my personal crisis moment on climate late last year, and decided that mid-2020 I’d eject from what I’m doing and go 100% climate. I’m on track - and your podcasts have been key for me to learn while I’m still doing my day gig." more every day!

one cool thing about having a slack community attached to your podcast is you can invite guests into the slack room before their episode, and they can get a great sense of who the audience is they will be speaking to. even better than an IRL event!

Since the world is constantly in flux and no two moments in time are the same (not to mention how much luck goes into “success”), it is dangerous to assume that the most successful people from one era aren’t wildly wrong about the next one.

Good thoughts below on how to assess if a vc is serious about climate beyond a climate email address. (And in absence of a dedicated fund)

Monday thoughts: when is the first tier one VC going to have a dedicated climate tech fund the way KPCB had an iFund back in the day? a climate email address is a good start, but let's see some real skin in the game :)

Just got this email from the head of a very well known climate org, and upcoming guest. The MCJ ethos isn’t just for newbies like me, the vets seem to like it too ❤️ And why is everyone a stan?!

I am so excited to get this one out there. If you have skills doing SOMETHING but nothing obvious for helping w/ climate, this is a must listen! That was , and he found a great way to help: He's giving away his behavior change program free to those working on climate!
