In reality, the Senate and the president are equals with different jobs. President gets to pick the candidate eligible to be interviewed. The Senate gets to decide whether to interview and if to hire. The president signs final papers only after Senate decides to act.

In McConnell’s defense, he isn’t being hypocritical. His statements suggest that he sees the Senate as a means to an end, not an important institution in its own right. According to this view, Democrats can’t do what Republicans do because they have different ends.
