🎤 talks about coding on a live stream, research as a ‘drug,’ connecting the academic idea of expertise to everyday context, recording yourself coding, applying research to the TDD teaching technique, and human learning.

I feel like the typical comp sci education is like teaching folks how to cook by having them grow their own herbs and spices, but never explore when to use thyme vs. rosemary vs. paprika. So folks end up not knowing why to use a List vs. Map vs. Set (but they can write one!).

100% this. And you can replace "students" with "people who are reading your tutorial docs". "Students Don’t Need Simple Examples" by

Loved this tidbit from — If you’re putting off giving a talk or writing a blog post on a topic that “someone else has already covered,” remember: There’s always new musicians and actors winning awards every year, bringing their unique perspective to the same genre

That’s not what the data means: 73% went to a movie at least once, but only 62% went to a library at least once. Those who visited libraries did so more often than movie goers.

Whenever I read "blah blah blah for visual learners" I always mentally substitute "for people with working visual systems". So here it's "A note-taking app built for people who can see." Sounds silly now, right?

There's been renewed interest in this book. Given that Richard Mayer is the epitome of the cognitive scientist, his advocacy of drawing, mapping & imagining may surprise (some of) you. Read about it in this summary, available from my website:

I find this when getting new information that doesn’t “fit” with my pre-existing knowledge and have to struggle to “rearrange” it or even throw some of it out to make the new stuff fit correctly, i.e., making sense of it.

Software architecture is mainly about the design of the system — about boundaries (design across), be (identity, purpose, capabilities, properties), behave (flows and transformations, mechanisms, how it works and is structured to), and become (co-evolve)
