You've heard the story. The news industry is suffering. Journalists are getting laid off, newspapers are going out of business, and ad dollars are going to social media. And the news feels crazier and crazier each day. Here's what's happening. THREAD

Most people never, ever forget the first person to give them a sizable advance on their own self-confidence — there's no greater security in life than being a serial enabler of wonderful young people

My student killed a motorcyclist in an accident. It destroyed him. He dropped out of school. Severe depression. Want to know what pulled him out of it? The parents of the man he killed. They asked him to meet for dinner. He goes now once a year. Forgiveness is healing.

i've recently become obsessed with all the insane corporate ways we say normal things to each other. "I’m a little confused" is by far my favorite - it's absolute rage masked as a professional pleasantry. what are some of your best/most insufferable work gibberish phrases?

I’m not religious, and there was a time I’d have scoffed at reading this book, but it is thought provoking. Good reminder for me that you earn a high return on an open mind. “Our excesses are the best clues to our own poverty, and our best way of concealing it from ourselves”

"So I started my startup in my parents basement.." (Your parents' basement you lived rent-free in?) "So I borrowed $50k from my friends and.." (You had rich friends who could spare $50k?) "So I lived off my savings for the first year.." (You had savings to last a whole year?)

Being a founder is seeing a future no one else can see quite yet and persisting your way to making it a reality in front in of their eyes.

Thread: What city you live in. Who you date or marry. Which job you choose. We think we make these choices ourselves. The unseen hand in them all is the networks that surround us. Networks are key to life's 7 big crossroads:

There is little more dangerous to founders than accepting “conventional wisdom”. When you’re changing way things are done, convention is the enemy. Instead, dig to the foundation. To first principles. Find those dots + connect them up in new ways. Therein lies breakthrough.

Pace layering is a great framework that can be applied in various contexts: civilizations, natural ecosystems, buildings and products. Each system can be subdivided into layers, each one of which has a different speed of evolution. The fast layers innovate, the slow stabilize.

I love this video of Kyrre Gørvell-Dahll’s creative process in flow. What are some good videos that show you how people make things?
