    Democratizing the ocean means giving more people access to the ocean. In nearly all of my deep sea expeditions, I am the only person / woman of color- we are missing a whole demographic! While 70% of countries have a deep sea bec, only 15% have access to it.

    The live commentary on telepresence boats is also very humanizing (to the public) for scientists. You hear not just uncertainty, but wonder, joy...even boredom, which is a very real part of research.
