My God, you can't be this stupid.

You’d think Sciutto would, oh, I don’t know, think before tweeting. Acknowledging Lee’s military skill (or his role in ensuring there was no post-war insurgency) doesn’t signal approval of the Confederacy.

I would have expected Trump to say he likes generals who don’t lose wars.

So, he felt he had a duty to commit treason and break his oath to the Constitution to protect the enslavement of an entire race? Still not admirable for being wrong.
-
His oath and honor was to Virginia first. AND if more politicians cared more for their own states common good as apposed to centralized power in DC and their own personal wealth and position we would all be better off.
-
Many of us still understand that and value our states. Lee swore his allegiance to the union and the Constitution. Those were the oaths he swore and broke, no matter what he said his reasons were.
-
These Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions asserted the following propositions: The Federal government bad been formed by a "compact" or contract among the states. It was a limited government, possessing only specific delegated powers. Whenever it attempted to exercise any 2 of 3

What is your point other than to ignore context? People's lives are made of an inordinate of decisions, interactions, triumphs and disasters. Robert E Lee was a brilliant general, despite your wish otherwise. That he headed the Army of Northern Virginia doesn't change that.

Don’t you think things were a bit more complicated than this? His choices were to fight against his country or to invade his state, where his friends, family, and neighbors lived. Can we at least consider the full context?
-
One can separate his service to the Nation during his 32 years of service to the U.S. Army, but when given the option he broke the oath he swore and became a traitor to the nation. His state wasn’t invaded, it chose to break away. Not as complicated as some like to wax.
-
If he had become the leader of the union army wouldn’t he have immediately marched on Richmond?
-
We could hope that he would have done so—likely, ending the rebellion that cost nearly 750k lives, and ridding our country of slavery. Instead Lee picked up arms against our country ... because Virginia. Talented military leader? Sure. A traitor to his county? Absolutely.
