Nice strawman. It's the desire to preserve culture essentially. It's easy to argue with the worst possible reasoning isn't it? At least TRY to understand opposing views. Argue with the strongest argument, not the weakest. It's impossible to grow otherwise.

Sorry, I'm confused. Preserve which culture? The French-American of inland Maine, the west Texas rancher, the Wyoming range, Boston southie, Chesapeake Bay crabbers, the Scandinavian heritage of Minnesota? This country has been melange of cultures since before the Revolution.
-
Arguments based on "preserving culture" seem to ignore the American heritage: over 300 years of melding different aspects of various cultures to create distinct regional cultures and communities.
-
"Preserving culture" is really just a soundbite. Because it sounds a lot more palatable than "maintaining social and economic dominance".
-
Right? Want to preserve your culture? Do your folk dances, speak your language, make your food - but you can’t force others to love it/do it to. But most people who use this culture argument don’t have a culture anyone would miss anyhow.

It’s doublespeak for ‘we don’t want to lose the advantage we get from a racist society, to forgo our privileged status,’. The fear of being on the same level as the people they have despised and put down.
-
And an inability to see how racism hurts THEM (albeit much less), or to conceive of a word where we live peaceably without a boot on the neck of the weak.
-
I absolutely agree. And I would add that racism hurts the society we live in. When talented people are prevented from offering their best to a society because of discrimination, we all lose.
-
Is it possible that not wanting the culture to change drastically and quickly isn’t racist? Especially if the cultures that are coming over are much more regressive.
-
the fact that you call other cultures “regressive “ is a clear sign of racism even if you don’t want to admit it to yourself. No different from Trump’s comments on Haiti and African countries. - 1 more reply

The problem is not with ‘minority.’ It's with ‘our own country.’ In that construct lurks the suggestion that by being theirs, it's no one else's.
-
I think the problem is with both honestly
-
I'd stipulate to that.

“Trump’s only true skill is the con; his only fundamental belief is that the United States is the birthright of straight, white, Christian men, and his only real, authentic pleasure is in cruelty.”https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2018/10/the-cruelty-is-the-point/572104/ …
-
“It is that cruelty, and the delight it brings them, that binds his most ardent supporters to him, in shared scorn for those they hate and fear: immigrants, black voters, feminists, and treasonous white men who empathize with any of those who would steal their birthright.”
-
1— Trump has tightly coalesced with those you cite, but I submit he's in it first and foremost for the pageantry, power and embezzlement opportunities. Burnett, birtherism, Bannon, Sessions, Miller, Russian compromises [inter alia] aligned to form this particular messaging.
-
I agree completely, I just think all of them have an idea of who this country “belongs to” and hate those they consider to be “others” who would try to claim a seat at the table
-
‘Alterity.’ No wonder racists espoused the malignant narcissist. The deplorables despise the non-whites. Trump despise anyone who's not him. When he ad-libs at a Hitlerian rally and they applaud, he and they think they agree. But they're talking about different things.

i also really like the excuse of 'preserving their culture' as if you cant preserve your culture as a minority or your culture includes being the majority. lol. excuses excuses
-
Wait... There's culture worth preserving?
-
What exactly is the American culture we are preserving? I’m a 4th generation American and the only culture I have is from my ancestors and their cultures.
-
The Cheesecake Factory and strip malls!
-
And titty bars. And do you still have the semi naked restaurants too? Hooters or something? Yeeuwww!
-
