Took me a moment to process that one. I guess it's not an expression one would usually write, but i also just realised that i use spacing and different sizes of | (when by hand) to make it clearer. Nice example though :)

I'd have to check but with LaTeX a \left| and \right| would probably produce larger pipes in nested expressions with absolute values. Also took me some time to see the ambiguity here.

how could it be 5? |-1| - 2|-3| = 1- 6 = -5
-
|(-1*|-2|-3)| = 5

If that's |-2| then it has no operation?

Correct! My thoughts exactly. Its syntax operation incompleteness, not game theory incompleteness of the entire structure. Even tho incompleteness def exists... it's just more abstract than that

Yes: I wrote a parser for asciimath syntax, and it has an open bug from someone who encountered just such an ambiguity. It involved normal parentheses too, somehow

Please stop trying to make math ambiguous. The purpose of math syntax is to remove the ambiguity. If there is a question about what the statement should say, then it is written incorrectly, and that should be addressed. |-1| -2|-3| means 1 - 2(3) = 1 - 6 = -5
-
What else could it mean? If you want | -1×|-2| -3 |, then you would have written it with taller abs values (not available on Twitter), or with parenthesis: | (-1|-2| - 3) |
