What started as a long, detailed post about manually installing an HIE-based development environment with is now a much shorter post about how to get from zero to a Haskell IDE in a matter of minutes, thanks to devcontainers!

What's wrong with exceptions? They create a second system logic of control flow, disconnected from the usual one, unpredictable, hybridized and intertwined. We should stop using them (or use a language that doesn't have them, like Go)

An astrophotographer has clicked an exceptional video, wherein we can feel the rotation of the earth Using a tracking mount, aligned with North Star, he kept clicking images every 12 seconds for the next 3 hours. The camera is looking at the same portion of the Milky Way Fab!

In case you don't know, there's a program called f3probe that I use on all new drives to detect fakes: HTH

Please discuss: When you read a book, going along, you try to find something you read earlier in the same book, but it is hard to find and sometimes impossible to find. Have you had such experiences? Any theory what's going on? How to fix problem? thank you, et

A 52-year-old Navy SEAL was accepted to Yale and expected to find “snowflakes” and “safe spaces.” Instead he found it was the people who mock college students who are sheltered, brittle, and close-minded. Worth a read, and consistent with my experience.

Teach before you're ready. Seriously. The way to really know something is to teach it, and as you teach it, you become more aware of what you don't know. Teaching over time eliminates unknowns and leads to better mastery.

Today I learned that it’s useful to put metal in microwaves; it gets hot and helps cook the food. It’s pointed metal that’s dangerous; that can arc. Foil ok, crumpled foil bad. Thick metal racks ok, twisty tie wires bad. Spoons nbd, forks very bad.

This is triggering. If you feel you can watch it, please do. If you can’t, that’s more than ok too. Please share for someone who may need to see or hear it.

Nothing blows my mind quite as much as the idea that chicken used to be an elite delicacy prior to 1960

I just went through U.S. border patrol at the airport and the officer saw all the Middle East stamps on my passport. He asked what I do. I expected a hassle. Instead, he said “I have a lot of respect for journalists. Thank you for putting yourself in danger to tell us the truth.”

This still gives me chills. Ingenious. Carl Sagan explains how the Ancient Greeks, Eratosthenes of Cyrene, the chief librarian at the Library of Alexandria, inferred that the Earth was round and calculated its circumference 2200 years ago. 240BC
