Here’s why “if you use a mask incorrectly it’s worse than not wearing one at all” is wrong:
Doing it “incorrectly”: Touching the front of mask that has been contaminated.
Doing it “correctly”: Don’t wear a mask, and receive contamination directly on uncovered mouth.

Worse, when the only people telling the truth are ignoble, we've ceded a perverse moral high ground to them.

No, masks don't help when only 1,000 people are sick. Or 10,000. That isn't a lie. If you think it was a lie, you'd wear a mask in your own home. But unless someone is sick, it will continue to be unnecessary.

I agree mostly but people do need to know that the most important thing is for sick people (anytime not just now) to wear masks when in public places. People need to know that masks help but aren’t perfect for your protection and have to be used correctly

This is probably a lost cause, but the "noble lie" is constitutive -- a claim that makes the political community possible in the first place. It doesn't mean any bullshit lie employed in defense of whatever policy.
