"What's the endgame here?" There is none, and there never is one. Foreign policy is never "fixed," and things never get tied up in a neat little bow, particularly in the Middle East. You manage the situations as best you can, and try to adapt as best you can.

There is no "five step plan for comprehensive peace in the region." You're not assembling IKEA furniture. You're trying to manage your interests, protect your people and allies, and deter your enemies in an amorphous, dark, confusing, complicated region with dozens of factions.

If none of your people and none of your allies got killed today, you probably did it right. But in a region with factions, militias, spies, assassins, terror groups, and fundamentalist maniacs, you're never going to keep the days and nights quiet for long.

It’s really dope how my whole body hurts all the time or how I woke up screaming in 2007 and concussed my girlfriend because I was having night terrors. Awesome how I ruined my body and wasted my youth for nothing.

That's the way it is, that's the way it's always been, I never understood why that's such a hard concept for people to grasp.

There was an Israeli response I was fond of when I was in the Army. “Don’t you know you’ll just create more terrorists?” “Don’t you go out and cut the grass every two weeks?”
