So excited about this new challenge. has been a huge force in journalism for so long, and I'm honored to join and help tackle the many issues facing journalism today. I look forward to working with many of you & my colleagues on what should be a fascinating journey.

Every game the past two weeks has been like watching Fargo: a few hours careening back and forth between joy and horror. And do I fear tonight's ending is going to be Buscemi-like? Oh, you betcha.

I learned today there is professional cornhole league, the unfortunately acronymed ACL. This is simultaneously stunning but not at all surprising.

    What a night for baseball!

Yesterday was a weird day of baseball. -- Both teams that scored seven runs in the first inning lost. -- The Mets got two in the 1st and lost 20-2. -- Pirates got two in the 1st and lost 6-2. -- Reds got four in the 1st and lost 7-5. -- Rays got two in 1st and lost 15-6.

Not a lot of days where the can lose by 18 runs and have it not be the worst loss by a New York baseball team that day.

Rich was one of the true digital journalism pioneers. And a wonderful guy who always made time for me when I wanted to bend his ear. So sad.

Of course, my favorite story wasn't related to the launch. It was when our profanity filter got wiped out and we had to get a group of journalists together to brainstorm what words needed to be blocked. A group has never been a better match for its task.

I barely slept from April 1995 through June 1996. I put on a ton of weight. I had no money. But I never had more fun. So I wanted to mark the official 25th anniversary with something more than a screenshot. Thanks for indulging. (19/19)

I quietly walked to the men's room in the basement office at 15th & L and kicked a stall door off its hinges, dented a paper towel dispenser and then walked back to my desk -- past a bunch of people who'd heard all this -- and quietly rebuilt the damn thing. (18/x)

I once tried to publish a package about Mike Tyson getting out of prison after working on it for four hours. The package just disappeared, AFTER which I was informed that I should have made a copy, as Interchange was eating packages instead of publishing them. (17/x)

Interchange had its bugs. It was the only system I've ever worked on where we could all just sense a crash coming. We'd all start screaming "Save! Save! Save!" and prayed a few hours worth of work would not be lost. (16/x)

This isn't to sell short the experience we had on AT&T Interchange, which was also quite fun. We started there (as a paid site, btw), but it became clear pretty quickly with the advent of the browser that the proprietary system era wasn't long for the world. (15/x)

In the past, I've posted that initial home page and gotten snarky responses like, "Did you not hire desIgners?" These, of course, are comments made by idiots. We had great designers. What we didn't have were tools that resemble anything used by web professionals today. (11/x)

And while it's absolutely true that the paper didn't give much of a damn about what we were doing, we didn't really care. They couldn't tell us what to do, and we weren't asking anyway. and had our backs, and that's all we needed. (10/x)

But we got that whole report up in a few hours, which was mind-boggling at a time when you couldn't just slap a PDF on the web. Nothing was easy, but it was almost all exhilarating. (9/x)
