Of the kids charged as adult, 88.77% are Black and 93.12% are boys. This is an abysmal stain on our state’s profile. It’s time we treat children as children.
Our citizens lack transparency and accountability of what occurs behind the walls in our state correctional facilities. There is nothing wrong with oversight, but it is wrong to do nothing!
Bring a correctional ombudsman to Maryland !
Maryland’s law requiring youthful offenders accused of heinous crimes to be automatically charged as adults should be repealed, youth advocates told a Senate committee. Our 41st district delegation is sad beyond words about the loss of another of our children. Life and promise needlessly extinguished in an instant. 🙏🏽 for family, friends, community.
Today we learned about a fatal shooting involving a Forest Park HS student. The shooting took place after school, away from campus. Police are investigating. Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and school community. Counselors will be available tomorrow at the school.
make clear through the data and research that we get better outcomes for kids and increased public safety when kids are served in the juvenile system. STOP sending kids to the adult system, it fails kids and our communities. #YESAct

Senator Carter has been a consistent fighter for justice even when it cost her politically. I appreciate her willingness to do the right thing, even when it’s not the popular thing. And she passed the Healing MD’s Trauma Act!

's then-SB 157 to expand student power on the Board of Ed.
Against the odds, we passed it — but Hogan vetoed it. With Moore in, we're now back for a round 2. 🧵
for help w/ tonight's #MooreMillerInauguration wrap up show. Unfortunately we could not air Bishop Hickman's interview due to time constraints so it is included in our web story. Appreciate his time
gives MLK Day speech, noting certain King speeches — opposing Vietnam War, for example — are purposely not emphasized. King was “a radical revolutionary” willing to put everything on the line in pursuit of “liberation of his people.”
In Maryland, a rich state, children still suffer from substandard education, “arms dealers” have put “weapons of war” on the street and we have been “slow-walking” a living wage,
The senator also made a point in her speech that Dr. King, at the time, did not enjoy the popularity that he has in death. His work for economic opportunities, against the war, etc were deeply unpopular among some. But he pursued what he believed was right and just, she said.
Senator @jillpcarter gave an amazing speech on the Senate floor tonight if you missed it, do yourself a favor and check it out!!

gave a shout out to her political foremothers,The Hon. Iris Reeves (bright blue) & The Hon. Vera P. Hall (red mask) at her #MLKDay2023 speech at the MD Senate.
Sen. Carter’s mother was an important othermother to me ♥️🥲🥰#BlackWomenMatter
At the crux of the matter is the CRB letter that sustained excessive force claims by BPD officers who shot #FreeKeithDavisJr. Davis fumed over publically holding BPD responsible by anyone OTHER than BPD (a civilian body, gasp).
SenCarter's take, but it's all public record.
regarding her goals for the new legislative year. At the top of her list: to continue creating legislation that addresses inequities in the Black community.
Congratulations @SenatorSusanLee, who has been a true leader on critical issues, including reducing domestic violence and data privacy, during her time in the Senate. 1/2

& say congrats on her upcoming 20th legislative session for #Baltimore's 41st District!
I was a student page in 2003, & I got to meet her in when she first began as my district delegate. She's been a progressive champion ever since! ✊🏾
UPDATE after today’s hearing Re: the public obtaining court recordings in Maryland: The MD Supreme Court decided to send this back to the rules committee/kick to General Assembly. So, no decision was made today—and no amendments were made either. This is good!
Bernice Mireku-North, an attorney and criminal justice reformer, was supported by 14 members of the committee after two rounds of voting during an emergency meeting to choose a replacement for Del. Eric Luedtke.
Thanks, Senator Carter!
+1 on your point about judicial elections.
Judicial appointments should also expand beyond corporate lawyers & prosecutors to include more public defenders and defense attorneys. If that can’t be written into statute, Moore should follow Biden’s approach
