- “uhh, yeah, what’s wrong?”
- “ok, I just thought you were kidnapped or in some distress. You started repeating your answers very calmly and I was sure you were trying to signal me something”
- “oh wow, that’s pretty crazy!”

We both realize that while I got disconnected, she got a replay using a perfect recording of my side of the call. We talk about what it could mean and how this can’t be a normal cell network behavior, and we get cut off again.

I immediately call back, and she’s on call waiting! she swaps to answer me and we go for it and merge the calls. Surrealistically, it actually merges and we both fucking listen to myself as of 3 minutes ago respond to my wife with “oh wow, that’s pretty crazy!”

We cross the 3min mark and guess what? I get disconnected with same exact surveillance system glitch. This was GSM call, not WhatsApp or FaceTime, phone was on 4G (VoIP/LTE?), roaming on local carriers. There is no reasonable interpretation other than an active recording glitch.

I’m aware Airports can be loaded with surveillance; still a first for me. Did any of you share this experience? For those recording, you’re wasting your time. No secret sauce goes on GSM. For those considering attacking my device, I hope we meet during forensic analysis

Plausible explanation: Call stretching (fraud scheme) by transit carriers e.g. explained here: https://www.sigos.com/success-stories/success-story-interconnect-fraud-call-stretching-detection/ … Surveillance at German airports is less likely, surveillance gear normally is not that buggy.

It’s a billing / interconnect scam designed to keep the profit side of the call going, while the loss side is disconnected. Real surveillance leaves no audible traces…

This is why one should always travel with burner/travel only devices. Baseband side of a modern smartphone tends to be a softer target than the OS side. Never connect important devices to GSM network on travel. And use at least WhatsApp or perferably signal also with wife :)

on one of the telecom discussion groups I monitor somone "in the industry", as the saying goes, discussed this about two years ago. If I'm recalling correctly (that's a big if) he said it was part of a billing scam issue going wrong. I'll see if I can find further info.
