Back at work today after six months of parental leave (four of it paid) and want to share some reasons why I will always be grateful to @nytimes for its leave policy and the women here who lobbied for it. 1/

I'd always known in theory that parents need time at the beginning but as in journalism there's nothing like experiencing the facts for yourself. 2/

A person needs several weeks to recover baseline physical functionality after giving birth. If I'd gone back to work after only a few weeks (as many ppl do) it would've been like breaking my foot and then trying to run an ultramarathon. 3/

If you're nursing you can't be apart from the baby, or not pump, for more than a few hours without risking pain or even an infection. Being at home made this infinitely easier to manage. 4/

The reports of sleep deprivation at the beginning are not exaggerated. Having months of leave meant I could establish a regular sleep schedule for my baby before returning to work. 5/

I could go on. Bottom line: 🙏 to NYT, the women trailblazers here past and present and to my colleagues for backing me up. Leave for new mothers is not a luxury but a physical necessity. 6/6

I spent my career working with kids on Medicaid as a mental health therapist for nonprofit agencies. I earned less than most teachers in my state. My own maternity leave? Unpaid. I’m not working anymore and may never go back to the field.

I was hired to a job when someone went on maternity leave. The day she came back I was fired. Two sides to the story
