My big takeaway from has been understanding the context of the tension between "algorithmic" and "anti-algorithmic" solutions Sometimes there's a problem where you should do some code or math to make it better Sometimes you just need to shut down the system

Fascinating talk by comparing goals of welfare economics to ML fairness, demonstrating how fairness constraints can make everyone worse off

Discussion of surveillance tech - like facial recognition - all too often focusses exclusively on its impact on individual privacy. But it will also harm our freedoms to act collectively - at protest, football or even community festivals.

the power to say no manifests outside the scope of the individual but is still built upon it - brings up the question of what action within corporate tech is meant to make the individual tech worker feel good/better about themselves vs what stops the build

placing the onus of deciding when not to build(/design/deploy) on those without real power in the situation is a corporate strategy to shirk blame and avoid true accountability

Okay, so real quick, I feel like I really need to explain intersectionality to white people because stuff like this, even though it's well meaning is getting on my nerves. It's really hard to see a black woman's work be misused over and over again by progressives/well meaning ppl

Let's be clear about this, : White supremacy, misogyny, ableism ARE ALL PART OF CAPITALISM. Class oppression and exploitation are deeply and inextricably tied to racism, patriarchy, ableism. Corporations coopt the language of progressivism to perpetuate harm in+outside.

Contradictions abound at FAT*, but a basic one is that by and large, the algo fairness community isn’t a social agent capable of making its own desired changes. Execution is left to corporations & states (thus utterly toothless) or activist-organizers (who aren’t reading papers).

I remember 's talk at the first FAT* on reframing prediction tasks as interventions - this talk is similar in its concise, but impactful and biting, criticism of how data scientists are fundamentally framing their work. Really excellent!

I wish that ethics in STEM spaces weren't just emphasized as "Don't cheat on exams and fabricate data," but more so "What are the broader impacts of our work on the welfare on surrounding and distant communities? For whom could this intellectual pursuit be a possible detriment?"
