If you won't say it I will: IRC is part of the technology priesthood and is a significant barrier for new users.

IRC helps propagate the myth of the "real" programmer.
While I don't disagree with you, a product that gives each project a walled garden isn't better. What is ircs failing to you?

Perhaps there are ways to fix IRC but, honestly, I don't have the time to fix it. It is just *obviously* hostile to new users.

IRC is good. IRC is also a broken mess. We *can* fix it, though.
