It was a complete fantasy that suddenly everyone could afford a private driver, servants fetching food, and assistants running errands without workers being exploited AND simultaneously creating multi-billion dollar gig-app companies. Complete fucking fantasy.

"Money can't buy happiness" means "the mindless accumulation of excess wealth ultimately leads to diminishing returns on happiness." It does not mean "poor people should learn to be content without basic necessities or financial security."

The average temperature in Stockholm in January was 7°C warmer than normal. Parts of central Sweden had an average of over 10°C warmer than normal. Yet, this is barely even mentioned in the media... (Source: SMHI)

I had to get a background check for my job, and it turns out the report is a 300+ page pdf of every single tweet I’ve ever liked with the work “fuck” in it. Enjoy your dystopian bs! *waves*

Development using might not be for the faint of heart, but the reward of deterministic builds may be too good to ignore it:

The surgeon’s hand is visibly trembling. The scalpel’s blade glints as it catches the light. I’m a medical student, scrubbed in on the case. I’m not going into surgery, I know that. I’m here for him. He glances at me and notices I’m holding my breath. He grins. “Relax.” 1/

Browsers, stop facilitating this. Don't allow installation of any extensions etc. except with user intent through the browser UI.

We really shouldn't be surprised that Google has turned their search engine into an ad engine. This is the basic, predictable playbook of monopoly power. Once the quality of the product stops mattering, because all competition has been vanquished, you raise prices. This is it.

The ADHD trait of "a million projects" is actually an adaptive strategy for brains that very specifically can't do what they set out to. By working "sideways" on many things, you get a *lot* done—while feeling like you "never do anything" (i.e., what you're "supposed" to do). 1/

We have been brainwashed into an illusion that all issues have valid “both sides” - that to be rational you have to acknowledge “good people and valid arguments on both sides”. Sometimes things are just wrong, if you can’t see that you’ve become irrational trying to be rational.

⏲️ As of today, we have about eighteen years to go until the Y2038 problem occurs. But the Y2038 problem will be giving us headaches long, long before 2038 arrives. I'd like to tell you a story about this.

Okay....so Oslo's winter is pretty mild, rainy and not snowy. I was curious to know how abnormal this is, and some nice people sent me this website: I pulled temp, rain and snow from 18/01/1950 -> 18/01/2020...time for the charts...

Related: Yes, the planet will survive our shenanigans. But people are substantially less hardy than rocks. Our survival depends on what we do. We can be smarter than algae, or we can follow the path of stromatolites. It’s our choice.

How exactly do we expect to successfully terraform another world to be Earthling-friendly when we’ve made our planet less hospitable? We didn’t maintain Earth’s climate & we’re failing to correct back despite it getting noticeably less pleasant. We’re un-terraforming Terra.
