This is one of the most powerful statements of American Jewish identity that we've seen from a major figure in American public life in recent years. And because he has the wrong politics on Israel, American Jewish establishment organizations will totally ignore it.

It's hard for non-Jews to understand how meaningful it is to me to see a politician talk proudly and unabashedly about how Jewish identity, and not use it to make a statement about the state of Israel.

Can’t imagine why this one might be offensive.

As a Jew who also has family members who were affected by the Shoah, this is profoundly moving to see from a serious presidential candidate.

There’s a lot here to disagree with, and a lot that I object to, but it’s at least worth reading and considering.

The fact that polls show Trump is predicted to get a higher percentage of the Jewish vote in 2020 than he got in 2016 (still a minority, but a larger minority) is such an indictment of institutional Jewish leadership in this country.

I don't see how you can make the argument that Hillary Clinton "actually" won the 2016 presidential election (because she did win the most actual votes), and then not also argue that Sanders won Iowa 2020, by the same principle. But motivated reasoning is a powerful logic.

The thing about opposition to "Jewish atheism" is it allows a person to be antisemitic while claiming to be fine with "authentic Jews," supposedly the ones who believe in God. Witness Winston Churchill, in 1920, saying he was fine with "good Jews" but not "international Jews."

Look, I don’t believe anyone intentionally rigged the Iowa caucuses, and I generally think incompetence is a more likely explanation than malevolence. But if authorities want us not to turn to conspiracy theories, they should try getting one single thing right.

Anyone who says that you have to believe in God to be a Jew really needs to meet more Jews.

Non-Jews: please don’t do this. Don’t asses Jewish identity based on belief or disbelief in God. That’s a really Christian way of defining Jewishness. Someone who is “ethnically and culturally Jewish” is just... Jewish.
