I think a lot of people are drawn to the work-at-home movement because they like being far away from their manager. How many of you would prefer to work at home if your manager lived in the apartment next door? Compared to you in an office and your manager working far away.

Yes, it's common to have an office-like environment in or near home to work from. Eliminating commutes is more important to bring about the flexibility than getting away from the manager if you have a healthy culture.

Even if you have a great relationship with your superior, sometimes the ego struggles to be reminded that you report to a superior (tbh I don't think escape is the way to address that but everyone needs breathing room sometimes)

I don’t think it’s fair to say “most” here? I explicitly work remote because I want to work at home. I like my home. I hate commuting. I can choose where I live without considering the location of an office (which can move).

At FB, I usually went to the office because it was only a 13 min drive, I had friends there, they gave us food, etc. That was my choice—I had a solid relationship with my manager. I still prefer remote, and most folls I know that do too are also driven by lifestyle.
