    How difficult it is to cast actors as Oasis and the Primals shows how unique they were (the guy playing Noel was all right). Had to explain to the wife why McGee is ready to pack everything in after meeting some guy called "Jimmy Saville".

    Structurally and tonally mad, Nick Moran's CREATION STORIES was still a fun whizz from the UK punk scene up to the death of Britpop at 10 Downing through the eyes of Creation's Alan McGee (110% commitment by Ewan Bremner).

    Veteran DP Kasamatsu Norimichi's cinematography deserves special mention. Shot on an ARRI Alexa Mini with extremely good grading. You'd be hard pressed to not think it was shot on film, perhaps thanks to his many years of experience in 35mm.

    Nishikawa is no doubt one of Japan's more talented filmmakers, but sometimes you can use too many colors, so to speak. Still, there are numerous moments of movie pleasure in this heartfelt drama of a man who only wants to be "normal" in the final act of his troubled life.

    Yakusho gives one of his stronger performances, which is saying something, but UNDER THE OPEN SKY's screenplay hosts too many secondary story threads for its own good (a common problem in contemporary film storytelling here, particularly with adaptations).

    Very interesting that Slamdance winner TAIPEI SUICIDE STORY is considered a feature at 45 minutes? The bare minimum I've ever seen is 60, usually 70 for most fests around the world. Japan -- land of 中編 -- would love this.

    This is brutal. The Oshima Prize, launched last year to support emerging Japanese filmmakers, wasn’t awarded to anyone this time due to a lack of worthy candidates. Jury member Kiyoshi Kurosawa complains there are too many films where “everything works out in the end.”

    I like this review of Kurosawa Kiyoshi's TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH「旅のおわり世界のはじまり」. "It’s a very strange film, but endearingly strange, and one that embraces the value of stepping boldly into unfamiliar new spaces and situations."

    "To The Ends of the Earth," which follows a Japanese TV show host adrift in Uzbekistan, can be viewed through the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art Spotlight Cinema series for one week beginning on Wednesday.
