Ugly confrontation between a huge crowd of protesters and a man they believe is an undercover cop has been ongoing for over an hour now. Have zip tied the man’s hands and fighting over whether to move him. He’s collapsed twice.pic.twitter.com/EfD13TLMA6

This is the dumbest, angriest incident I’ve seen during the protests so far. I asked protesters what the point was even if the man was a cop at this stage, they had no idea behind continuing to hold him.

Serious risk to the guys health just from stress and being bound and hot. Even if angriest protesters can be stopped attacking him.

Its all so ugly and angry and nihilistic. Asked kids who said he was faking what if he wasn’t, they said who cares. Asked what if he dies, who cares. Asked them what they think will happen if he is a cop and he dies, “so they shutdown HK? Good! We are ready for it, we want it.”

This is the most out of control, angry and just plain nasty I think I’ve ever seen a protest in Hong Kong. Unlike clashes with police, no matter how violent, this is hundreds vs one person, and a handful of paramedics desperately trying to help.

It just shows how much trust in the authorities has broken down. Even paramedics viewed with suspicion. Police nowhere in sight. A bunch of angry kids making life and death decisions that could shape the rest of the protests.

Standoff continues. There’s no one with any authority to attempt to broker a deal that enough of the crowd would accept. Handful of protesters have tried but they’ve been shouted down. Feels like most reasonable people (to say nothing of pan dem lawmakers) have stayed home.

Most surreal moments have been people (seeing press vest) come up to “explain” to me things they’re clearly getting from Telegram, claiming without evidence the guy is 100% a cop because someone Googled him, or that he had weapons (different guy) or that he was faking fainting.
