Today is Human Rights Day, marking the 71st anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In January 2019, the Administration started forcibly returning asylum seekers to Mexico under a new policy cynically named “Migrant Protection Protocols” (MPP).
Last week, Human Rights First released a report on the escalating human rights abuses against asylum seekers that are returned to Mexico by the Trump administration. The report found that "there are at least 636 publicly reported cases of kidnapping, rape, torture, assault, and
other violent attacks against asylum seekers and migrants returned to Mexico under MPP. Among these reports are at least 138 reports of kidnappings or attempted kidnappings of children in MPP." A recent study by the U.S. Immigration Policy Center at UC San Diego found that one in four people in MPP in Tijuana and Mexicali have been threatened with physical violence while waiting for court hearings.
The Trump administration's MPP policy is inhumane, cruel, and in direct contradiction to the values that America stands for. We must hold this administration accountable and VOTE as if lives depend on it - because they do.
