A delightful #podcast this morning from @LostWomenofSci on Flora Patterson, a mycologist who helped ensure Washington, DC, became known for its cherry blossoms. Also, there's mushroom "catsup" in there ... https://scientificamerican.com/article/this-overlooked-scientist-helped-save-washington-d-c-s-cherry-trees/…on @sciam
Interesting passage from @Milbank's #TheDestructionists on how smart people can use their brains to reject info that doesn't fit their identity or biases.
Ring any bells?

"Adult smokers who viewed an FDA-distributed youth-targeted anti-vaping public service announcement were less likely to consider e-cigarettes for smoking cessation, thus reducing acceptance of a potential cessation aid with growing empirical support"

One reason I like writing for @politico magazine is that they go all in to tell a great story.
A special thank you to @beatricezjin for creating lovely illustrations & a quiz (!) to go along with this weekend long read, out today:

Our intuitions are based in our autopilot thinking, which is low effort but emotional and tribal, and thus prone to errors.
Bottom line: Learn to recognize what your gut is telling you, but don’t blindly trust it.

Fingers crossed and perhaps this could be a model for other contentious health issues?

71% of people spend 3+ hours/day collaborating with others.
Yet, a third received no professional development in this critical skill.
Maybe it’s unsurprising that most people (72%) had been in at least one collaboration that was “absolutely horrendous” https://powerofus.substack.com/p/interview-with-deb-mashek-on-collaborhate…
In 2021, the % of US students aged 12-17 who had smoked a cigarette in the previous month was 0.4% for black students and 0.2% for Asian students! (2.1% for white 12-17 year-olds). https://samhsa.gov/data/release/2021-national-survey-drug-use-and-health-nsduh-releases#detailed-tables…

does not mince words: “Egg prices are up, along with bacon, because of climate-influenced animal disease and a growing world population that demands more protein.”
Well, somehow my first official Washington Post byline is about FAFO, which clearly should have been the word of the year 2022. HELLO, everyone. And thanks to my colleagues for allowing me to publish this insane thing
Our paper showing that e-cigarette sales correlate with a significant *shortfall* in cigarette sales is now published online at the Journal of Consumer Policy: https://rdcu.be/c3zuS. See below for my walkthrough of the study!
We’re fans of @VillageSquareUS. “A nervy bunch of liberals and conservatives who believe that dialogue and disagreement make for a good conversation, a good country and a good time”.

The biggest reduction in deaths from cancer has been for lung cancer. Lets continue to help more people to quit smoking. In addition to preventing cancer, it reduces COPD and cardiovascular diseases.
I am grateful every week for the painstaking effort that @Clive_Bates puts in to demolishing poor arguments masquerading as science. Spurious theories about the harms of #vaping keep people smoking

Any public health communication scholars going to analyze the bots/vaccine skeptics trying to highjack the ##NFL#hamlin tragedy with Covid vaccine misinformation??

. As a die hard Cyclone fan I held off on watching the Kinnick documentary but I watched today and it was great. A great watch for any sports fan, Iowan, history buff or anyone that wants to hear a fascinating story told very well.

This 'cast is worth a listen--good review of underpinnings of misinformation/misperceptions broadly and suggestions of how to address these challenges. Starting with that person in the mirror!
Thank you,
