Of course, I *could* have said it, but by doing so I would have become a target for focused and dedicated opposition, which would have diminished or even ended my ability to serve the functions I was hired to pursue. That’s how it works. At the moment.

I think you would not have faced any backlash at all if you had other and better suggestions as to what to implement to help promote a genuinely diverse program, and demonstrated that they were effective.
People who have not had leadership positions sometimes don’t appreciate the need to choose your battles.
And sometimes those in leadership don't fully apppreciate the grunt work we mere mortals put in, fighting social authortarianism on a daily basis. We also have jobs that we can ill-afford to lose. However if I lost mine, my children go hungry. Are your's ag a similar risk?

I'd suggest that you probably weren't performing the service you were there to perform anyway, if your main concern was maintaining the power and lack of accountability of professors.

So, then, asking to show how you don’t just teach about, rely on the research of, read/assign only the books/articles written by and, hire white men is ... discriminatory, burdensome, and even Orwellian? What a bunch of whingers. Go work somewhere my taxes and my kids won’t go.
The fact that you recognize that saying it would've made you a target emphasizes exactly why we need to be talking about equity, diversity, and inclusion in academia.

A believe a scientist should only be judged as a scientist by his scientific work. That is why I think adding "equity, diversity and inclusion statement" have no place in deciding promotion and tenure.
