It's so the devs can make sure UV's are properly mapped and wrapping to the 3D models as well as helping with visual perspective when testing.
Everyone does this initially.

I know, I took some classes for both 3D modeling and texturing. (did better in the latter texturing and lighting class). Just kind of throwing some bad jokes around. lol
