This morning me and my little family attended a virtual court hearing to finalize our teenager’s legal name change. It was a celebration and Denver County Court staff was helpful and delightful throughout. We are grateful to be in a state where we are not criminalized.

That said- this process took time and money (>$300) that we are privileged enough to have. And we aren’t done! Now we will go through the process of changing their passport, state ID, birth certificate, etc. Even in affirming states there are lots of barriers for trans folks.
