"New study finds Washington [football team] nickname much more offensive than previous surveys suggested." That's because previous surveys were done by the Washington Post, the house organ of the Washington football team. Only in American football could this be controversial.

tfw your work process requires a lot more work than is necessary, but you can't work any other way because every other way feels wrong. i.e., I can't outline worth a damn. I have to write a thing to know what happens in it. This is Not Optimal for a submission.

Dumb newbie question: When the comics company says they want a synopsis of the "overall story arc," but you're submitting a proposal for an ongoing, what do you write? Am I supposed to plan out twenty-four or more issues into the future and summarize those? Or just the first six?

the study of kinship structures in the Old Norse pantheon is unexpectedly fascinating. Loki as product of transgression--goddesses weren't allowed to have sex with giants (the reverse, though, was what all gods wanted, apparently)--and as a transgressor (he has sex w/a giantess).

Ahem. Fans of Irene Adler, Victorian heroines, and memorable female characters in general: ADLER looks like it's going to be "the League of Extraordinary Gentlewomen." And it's written by , who is Good. Check it out!

In the spirit of , I declare this to be ! The assignment: write the best obituary you can possibly write for Rush Limbaugh by the end of the month. (And by "best" I mean the one that used the Twain-esque "pen warmed up in hell.")

Today I learned that in the late 19th century at least one genealogist claimed that George Washington was descended from Odin. Which puts the American Revolution in a much different light, I must say.

Relatively small scale compared to the rest of this monstrosities, but--library customer (our major problem patron) on the phone demanded that I put her through to Ayatollah Khamenei's office "IMMEDIATELY." Hung up when I said I couldn't do that.

Just remember: the Super Bowl is between the team with the guy who beats women, the guy who beat up and strangled his pregnant girlfriend, and the fans who make racist chants...and the other team. Go Niners!
