New paper from my lab w/ 2 undergrads & Kira Forman-Tran as lead authors. Their thesis (co-supervised by @anaruizpardo_ ) showed that the mere presence of one's smartphone does NOT interfere with performance on a cognitively demanding task

I want to give a shout-out to my past self, who left me an unfinished draft with a section in the middle whose only instruction is "INSERT SOMETHING PROFOUND HERE"

Has anyone had participants record video or audio of themselves online, like via Qualtrics? Is this possible? If so, how did you do it? Any advice or tips appreciated 😊

I gave a talk while visibly pregnant and was introduced as “this is the postdoc who came to the US to have two anchor babies”

I got into my top choice for the PhD on a Wednesday. The Eng dept sent me health insurance packets, where to live, school demographics. I was hella excited. On Friday, I got an email from the asst grad director telling me my acceptance was sent by mistake & was for someone else.

The woman behind me on this train just asked her seatmate what the word “ideology” means and I feel like this is the closest I’m ever gonna come to being able to stand up and say yes when someone calls out “Is there a doctor on the train.”

Seen a lot of posts lately about work/life balance + evils of academia. I’m not denying their existence for many (+ some disproportionately), but I also want prospective to know this: My work is to play w ideas + talk to smart people. That’s a great life!

How many psychologists does it take to change a lightbulb? Only one, but the lightbulb has to *want* to change.

Grad school interview season is upon us. My former students and I prepared this list of potential interview questions (and some tips), primarily for social psych PhD programs in US. I hope this helps! Good luck! Link:

An older woman came into the bookstore today. I made a joke about a credit card reader issue and she said "these things are all programmed by twenty-five-year-old boys who don't comment their code" and somehow we ended up having a great conversation about programming and biases.

It is grad school interview season in North America. Amusing how esteemed social psychologists through all social psychology knowledge out of the window when approaching this topic. Despite interviews having no benefits for estimating students' future performance, many favor them

If you are a scientist, do you feel you have enough time in your job to learn new skills you think would improve the way you do science? If a magic wand could free up time to learn new skills that improve the science you are doing, how much time would you like to have?

How politicians talk to the masses has changed over time, becoming more nationalistic and communal (rather than appealing to hierarchy and duty). Neat new work by and Shige Oishi, now in press at PSPB

Neat peek into how people *feel* when blasting others with noise or sticking pins into dolls - we need more work that looks at “time”, and how emotions unfold across it.

One of the most unexpected challenges that I am facing in my new job is developing a good criteria for estimating graduate students/RA. I thought I had a clear idea of who I want to work with, but interviewing so many good people got me confused.... any advice?

1/3 As an outsider to this situation, hearing that everything that has come out are "all mistakes (...) not unheard of in data management" is a bit odd and really comes across as gaslighting
