    Yeah, this is concerning. Also highly concerning is how Fairview QB Aidan Atkinson was allowed to play 2019 season, breaking CHSAA records, after these allegations were finally reported to police on Aug. 30. I promise these are issues my newspaper won’t let go unanswered.

    ICYMI: The Denver Post's breaking news team did some in-depth reporting on police shootings in Colorado in 2019. They did it because there's no real statewide database that accurately illustrates how often they happen.

    Last year a source told me about plans for a high school reunion — in El Salvador. The class of ‘78 planned to stay in their country after graduation, but a civil war tore them apart. I traveled to El Salvador to attend the reunion. My latest:

    A lot of fear is tied to stigma around mental health & suicide. A lot of that fear is also because suicide, in general, is scary. This creates barriers to public conversations about what is a public health issue 2/

    There are several reasons why we're transparent with our reporting process for this project, but one of the main reasons is that there's a lot of fear when it comes to reporting on suicide, especially youth suicide 1/

    Reflecting on the work I've been following so far this year, and I'm so impressed by the openness with which and her colleagues have operated in reporting on the Colorado mental health system and teen suicide.

    Adjustments from yesterday (mentioned this late last night): 1) HEAVY SNOW during the PM commute in Denver - perhaps 1-2”/hour rates! 2) Probably closer to a 6-8” event for Denver now. Earlier flip + two bursts of heavier snow = I’d bump amounts across the metro.

    We did this because there’s no good statewide data. Police departments are required to report officer-involved shooting data to the state, but there’s no penalty if they don’t and the state never follows up to double check they have anything. So incidents remain unreported.
