Thanks for letting and me reprise our keynotes to get them recorded. I'm honored to share: From Prison to Python: Mass Decarceration: If We Don't Hire People With Felony Convictions, Who Will?

The result: an election system that, in my experience, fulfills its mission admirably. Kids watch. Formerly incarcerated folks with restored voting rights come. A new citizen just excitedly announced that she’s a 1st time voter. It’s beautiful & I’m honored to be a part of it.

We have ballots in 4 languages, sample ballots in 6, bilingual poll workers, and a call center supporting 100 languages. We have audio ballots, large font ballots, pen grips, magnifying glasses, curbside voting, and a station layout accessible to voters with mobility aides.

There are troubleshooting guides and escalation paths for every scenario, from missing clerks to hardware failures to a power outage to illegal electioneering. We process standard, vote by mail, and provisional ballots, as well as voter registration.

A polling station has up to 3 clerks and an inspector, all volunteers, who complete a 2 - 4 hour training shortly before Election Day and then set up, run, and tear down the station by following detailed checklists and scripts for engaging with voters on all voting scenarios.

How do you design a distributed, highly fault tolerant voting system made up of complex electronic and paper voting procedures, facilitated by 3000 volunteers across 600 polling stations, that is executed with integrity, is auditable, and is accessible to every voter?

I love volunteering with , to play a tiny role in ensuring that everyone has a welcoming, accessible, and efficient voting process, but also to participate first-hand in a fascinating set of engineering, product, design, and operational challenges.

SF tech folks: want criminal justice reform, but not sure how to contribute? Here's a concrete action you can take: We have an opportunity on November 5th to elect a District Attorney who wants to end mass incarceration. Vote, and get your coworkers to vote. Here's a playbook:

I'm voting for , who understands that our current system is ineffective as well as unjust, & has the clearest plan to decarcerate our city. This includes: end cash bail, focus on violent crimes, expand mental health diversion, & create a restorative justice program.

What you can do: 1. Volunteer in prisons. 2. Talk to your employer about volunteering in prisons. Also, check out: 1. : 2. : (coding program started at San Quentin) Volunteers → relationships → jobs.

Emile was an exceptionally connected person in an exceptionally connected prison (San Quentin is < 20 miles from San Francisco and has thousands of volunteers each month). Incarcerated people need more educational opportunities and more contact with potential employers.

We debrief on the interviews: Emile passed. His job offer goes into his parole packet. He's found suitable and is released on Sept 3, 2018 after serving 21 years. And he knows he has a job, healthcare, and a support system of new co-workers waiting for him. But Emile is lucky.

The interviews wrap. The team walks back through the yard and out the gate. The car ride home is full of introspection. "I forgot we were in a prison". "These guys are just like everyone else". In my experience, this is most people's reaction to spending time inside.

"Dress for the job you want". Emile did what he could with his state-issue blues. Thanks for helping him accessorize. He completes our interview panel. As interviewers wait their turn, they talk to other incarcerated men in the media center.

We converted our browser-based interviews to pen and paper. I got my team cleared to come into the prison to interview him. It's the first time in a prison for the interviewers. It's intimidating walking through the yard to the media center with a thousand men looking at you.

I happened to be one of those prison volunteers. Emile is a genius. Emile also needed a job. was hiring. I asked if he was interested in interviewing for an account management role with us. He was. We did some interview prep in the media center at San Quentin.
