I’m super interested in this take. Is there an already established home for OSS you prefer? A new foundation for each project doesn’t seem ideal either.

Definitely not a new foundation but check out Apache or software conservancy... Hell even checkout the openstack foundation

I'm not really sure what CNCF does. Its name sounds a lot around corporate, but they let good projects die (i.e. RKT)
-
I sadly think RKT died because few were really using it

I can’t dispute room for improvement, however I do think LF and CNCF by extension help with the corporate intent inevitable in valuable oss projects. The corp interests demand PR, LF helps keep it somewhat constrained.
-
Doing what corporations want is _actually_ LFs job and I'm definitely not saying they are doing their job badly, actually they excel at it. Just saying some projects need different things

Curious, did you ask makers and maintainers of projects, why they want their projects in the CNCF? Last (successful) attempt I followed was
@ThanosMetrics but I actually never asked@fredbrancz or@bwplotka on the reasons for joining. It just seemed like „the thing to do“ to me. -
Neutral ground and operational help. So far the support from
@CloudNativeFdn is amazing and we are grateful for that. Our decision was also easier: with@fredbrancz as@PrometheusIO maintainers we already seen the value. We will definitely apply for graduation to the next stages.

@jenkins &@jenkinsxio in LF's@CDeliveryFdn benefit from lots of services e.g. funding for interns via@outreachy & communitybridge, project health metrics with https://devstats.cd.foundation/ , growing community in China, etcThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

or we could just shame people into pay-to-play marketing foundations. I think that's best for us all
