They are absolutely making a profit (at least for NA and EU). FWIW I'm trying to bring more transparency to what is done with that money. It's slow going but I think we are making progress.

They are a non profit
The only difference between a for-profit and a non-profit is that the latter doesn't pay dividends to its shareholders. They can pay pretty lucrative salaries though, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (disclaimer: IANAL and generally not very informed on this matter)
Not just the money but also which vendors get to test their stuff over these projects.

IMO the kubecon keynotes last year at Copenhagen all merited being there. Amazing that so much money had to change hands for a non profit to display the right content.
