“I am skeptical of companies who don't really have open source in their founding DNA to do the best thing for the community in the long-run, and I worry that the cloud is just moving us back to a world of proprietary software.” Same. Really good piece from @skamillehttps://twitter.com/skamille/status/1107342522446172160 …

In my opinion (depending on the project of course) the projects coming out of cloud providers have less of a use to the more general industry and are more pieces of shit than projects that are derived elsewhere.

It’s more like it’s a play for cloud providers public relations than actually trying to solve a real problem, I found myself asking the people building the projects what problem they were solving time and time again and not really getting great answers.

You can see this in the way the projects are launched as well, huge PR stunts at the next big conference. Only to lead to back channels in slacks everywhere asking wtf X is even solving.

They are built in private then given to the world like a gift from god. That’s not community, that’s not transparent, and it’s taking “open source” in a very literal way, yes the source is open... but very little else is.

What I’m already seeing as a result of this is a new generation of developers who _only_ know this world. That’s sad. Their idea of an open source conference is the next large vendor event. Please don’t let the original open source hacker culture die by cloud marketing death.

Replying to @jessfraz
what are the conferences of this type? I've only recently considered attending conferences, and I come from a philosophical alignment with FLOSS, despite perceived (and actual) technical deficiencies. Would love to meet people and connect with the living/breathing philosophy.
